COMMENDING MRS. WINIFRED ANDERSON LYKES OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HER MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION, HER COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING HER COMMUNITY, AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO HER CHURCH.
Whereas, Mrs. Winifred Anderson Lykes, of Greenville County, is married to Mr. John W. Lykes, and together they are the proud parents of one daughter, Carole Lykes Williams; and
Whereas, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bennett College, and a Masters of Arts degree from A & T State University, and completed additional studies at Paine College, Furman University, and Clemson University; and
Whereas, her professional experiences include serving as an instructor at Carver High School, Sterling High School, Northwood Middle School, Hughes Middle School, and as a receptionist-secretary with the Phillis Wheatley Association; and
Whereas, her community involvement includes serving on the Appalachian Regional Advisory Committee for Aging, the Appalachian Regional Advisory Committee for Education; the Greenville AHEC Minority Advisory Council; the School Improvement Committee for Hughes Middle School; the Greenville Memorial Medical Center Advisory Council, where she now serves as Secretary; and the Greenville County Library Board of Trustees; and
Whereas, she is a member of the Greenville Council of Church Women; the Greenville Moles, Inc.; Greenville Chums, Inc., where she serves as Secretary; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; the Eight-Thirty Club, where she serves as President; Lady Esquire Club Auxiliary, where she serves as President; and Textile Real Estate, Inc., where she serves as President; and
Whereas, Mrs. Lykes was named 1981 Teacher of the Year for Hughes Middle School, 1984 Hughes Middle School Outstanding Classroom Manager, 1989 Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Distinguished Mother; and
Whereas, she is a member of Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she is Secretary of the Senior Steward Board; Chairman of the Commission on Public Relations; Chairman of the Hospitality Committee; Chairperson for Family and Friends Day; and a member of both the Church Music Committee and the Minna A. Calhoun Decorators Club; and
Whereas, Mrs. Lykes has been bestowed an Honor and Commendation Resolution by the Greenville County Council; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize Mrs. Winifred Anderson Lykes for a life dedicated to service to her community and humanity. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly recognize and commend Mrs. Winifred Anderson Lykes of Greenville County for her many years of outstanding service in the field of education, her commitment to improving her community, and dedicated service to her church.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Winifred Anderson Lykes.
