A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE LANDER UNIVERSITY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM AND ITS COACH, JOSEPH CABRI, ON WINNING THE 1998 NCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP, LANDER'S EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL TITLE AND TENTH OVERALL.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note with pride the extraordinary achievement of the Lander University Men's Tennis Team, under the tutelage of Coach Joseph Cabri, in winning the 1998 NCAA Division II National Men's Tennis Championship; and

Whereas, this championship is the eighth consecutive such title for Lander and its tenth such title overall; and

Whereas, the young men representing Lander in this signal achievement, Raul Campos, Erik Friberg, Martin Kahm, Jacob Svensson, Laio Teixeira, Frank Potthoff, and Jan Grueninger, are exemplars of the best in student athletics in intercollegiate athletic competition; and

Whereas, special recognition is due team member Frank Pothoff, for his role in the 1998 championship; for winning the 1998 Arthur Ashe Award, the highest award in college tennis based on scholarship, athletic ability, sportsmanship, and concern for others; for a singles and doubles record and a number one national ranking in doubles that has earned him his second All-American title in both singles and doubles; and for winning the Peach Belt Athletic Conference Player of the Year and his second Peach Belt Athletic Conference All-Conference Title; and

Whereas, Coach Joseph Cabri has set a truly remarkable standard--his teams have produced forty-six tennis All-Americans, a Dan Magill Award Winner, four Arthur Ashe Award winners, three Tennis Magazine All-Star Team Members, and numerous national Senior Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year winners, among these Erik Friberg, Rookie of the Year for this year's team--and the coach himself has won ten national coach of the year titles and been inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, and of greatest importance, Coach Cabri has strongly emphasized academics, as evidenced by his 1997 and 1998 teams being named national NCAA All-Academic Teams, his coaching of eighteen Academic All Americans, and his recent teams consistently maintaining a team GPA of 3.5 or above with eighty percent of recent graduates who played for him being either in graduate school or having earned graduate degrees; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might recognize the extraordinary achievements of the Lander Men's Tennis Team and its coach, Joseph Cabri. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their congratulations to the Lander University Men's Tennis Team and its coach, Joseph Cabri, on winning the 1998 NCAA Division II National Men's Tennis Championship, Lander's eighth consecutive national title and tenth overall.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Joseph Cabri.
