A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND COMMEND JULIA CHILES ADAMS, DIRECTOR FOR THE PAST THIRTEEN YEARS OF THE GREENVILLE COUNTY HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION UPON HER RETIREMENT, AND TO THANK HER FOR ALL THE CONTRIBUTIONS SHE HAS MADE DURING THE THIRTY-FIVE YEARS SHE HAS SPENT IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS AT LOCAL, STATE, AND REGIONAL LEVELS WORKING EFFECTIVELY ON HUMAN, SOCIAL, AND CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES.

Whereas, Julia Chiles Adams has dedicated thirty-five years of her life in leadership positions on the local, state, and regional levels working on human, social, and civil rights issues; and

Whereas, since 1987, Julia Chiles Adams has been the director of the Greenville County Human Relations Commission where she has effectively advocated for fair and equal opportunity for all citizens of the county; and

Whereas, in this position some of her many accomplishments have been to establish a comprehensive fair housing program, to organize the Palmetto Project Community Forums which is a community project seeking to promote racial harmony in Greenville's culturally changing community, to craft a "Law and You" law enforcement project to teach civil obedience and educate youth on procedures to follow when in the presence of law enforcement officers, and to establish the Greater Greenville CommUnity Task Force, a biracial committee dealing with issues of concern to the community; and

Whereas, prior to joining the Human Relations Commission, Julia Chiles Adams was project director for the Greenville Urban League, director of the United Labor Service Agency, and a case manager for the Family Counseling Service; and

Whereas, Julia Chiles Adams is a native of Greenville, educated in South Carolina's schools, and a life long member of Long Branch Baptist Church; and

Whereas, in addition to her work as director of the Human Relations Commission in Greenville, Julia Chiles Adams is the state vice president of the South Carolina Human and Community Relations Association, a member of the Minority Issues Task Force of the Chamber of Commerce, and on the Community Relations Task Force of BB&T Bank; and

Whereas, it is fitting for the General Assembly to pause in its deliberations to express its gratitude to this highly respected woman who has dedicated her life to the betterment of her community and the advocacy of equality for all of its citizens. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring, honors and commends Julia Chiles Adams, director for the past thirteen years of the Greenville County Human Relations Commission upon her retirement, and thanks her for all the contributions she has made during the thirty-five years she has spent in leadership positions at local, state, and regional levels working effectively on human, social and civil rights issues.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Julia Chiles Adams.
