A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF PINEWOOD, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY, AND RECOGNIZING ITS LONG AND LAUDABLE HISTORY OF SERVING THE EDUCATIONAL, HUMANITARIAN, AND SPIRITUAL NEEDS OF ITS MEMBERS AND THE PINEWOOD COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Calvary Baptist Church of Pinewood, South Carolina, was established in 1875, by a group of former slaves and their descendants to serve the Pinewood, Paxville, and Silver communities; and

Whereas, the first pastor, The Reverend C. W. Watson, walked off the two acres of land for the church site with his cane, and initiated worship services in a "bush arbor" constructed of bushes and vines; and

Whereas, the first church building, erected in 1880, was rebuilt in 1890 after its unexplained destruction; and

Whereas, along with providing for the spiritual and human needs of the community by becoming a center of worship and outreach, the membership dreamed of establishing a site for filling the educational exigencies of the local African-American children; and

Whereas, that dream became the reality of the Calvary Church School, which was the fountain of knowledge from which the community's children drank until the middle of the 1930's; and

Whereas, over the years, Calvary Baptist Church mothered the establishment of three offspring congregations: St. John of Pinewood, St. Mark of Silver, and Zion Hill of Paxville; and

Whereas, Calvary Baptist Church opened the doors to its third and present sanctuary building in 1968, which has withstood even the ferocious assault of Hurricane Hugo to continue to house its loyal membership; and

Whereas, the durability of the church building itself stands as a symbol for the enduring strength and loyalty of the faithful congregation of Calvary Baptist Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, hereby offer their congratulations to Calvary Baptist Church of Pinewood, South Carolina, on the occasion of its one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary, and recognize its long and laudable history of serving the educational, humanitarian, and spiritual needs of its members and the Pinewood community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to The Reverend E. L. Sanders, current pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, on behalf of its faithful members.
