A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND TIMOTHY SLOAN BLACKWELL, JR., OF COLUMBIA, FOR HIS BRAVERY AND HEROIC ACTIONS IN GETTING HIS ELDERLY NEIGHBOR VERNIS CORLEY OUT OF A BURNING BUILDING BEFORE THE FIRE HIT A GAS LINE AND CAUSED A TERRIFIC EXPLOSION, AND FOR HIS HEROIC EFFORTS IN FIGHTING AND CONTAINING A FIRE THAT THREATENED TO DESTROY THE HOME OF HIS NEIGHBOR VERNIS CORLEY ON MAY 22, 2000.

Whereas, Timothy Sloan Blackwell, Jr., of Columbia, was in his garage cleaning out his truck at approximately 9:30 P.M. on Monday, May 22, 2000, when he noticed the house across the street belonging to his neighbor Vernis Corley was on fire and burning; and

Whereas, after alerting his wife, Kay Blackwell, to call 911 and report the fire, Mr. Blackwell raced across the street, banged on the door of the Corley home to alert Vernis Corley that her house was on fire, and finally managed to get her safely out of and away from the burning building; and

Whereas, once Vernis Corley was safely out of and away from the burning building, Mr. Blackwell commenced fighting the fire with a garden hose in an effort to save the Corley home or at least minimize the damages until he was ordered away from the burning building by a deputy sheriff who had arrived on the scene who suspected the fire might hit a gas line and cause an explosion; and

Whereas, the fire did hit a gas line and did cause a terrific explosion that damaged the house; however, undaunted, and without regard to his personal safety, Mr. Blackwell returned to the burning building and continued with his efforts to fight and contain the fire until the fire trucks and professional firefighters arrived on the scene; and

Whereas, Mr. Blackwell's encounter with this fire was so close that he inhaled a lot of smoke trying to save his neighbor's home. He was taken by the Emergency Medical Service to the emergency room of a local hospital for evaluation and medical attention. He was given oxygen for his smoke inhalation and fortunately, was later released into the care of his regular physician who has provided additional medication; and

Whereas, on this occasion Mr. Blackwell exhibited the rare combination of courage and caring for one's neighbor. At the risk of his own personal safety he displayed determination and tremendous bravery in the face of known and unknown dangers inherent in getting an elderly neighbor out of a burning building and fighting and containing a tragic fire that threatened to consume and destroy his neighbor's home. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Timothy Sloan Blackwell, Jr., of Columbia, for his bravery and heroic actions in getting his elderly neighbor Vernis Corley out of a burning building before the fire hit a gas line and caused a terrific explosion, and for his heroic efforts in fighting and containing the fire that threatened to destroy the home of his neighbor Vernis Corley on May 22, 2000.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Timothy Sloan Blackwell, Jr., of Columbia.
