COMMENDING AND THANKING MRS. CARLRETTA POYAS WRIGHT UPON HER RETIREMENT FROM HER EXEMPLARY CAREER AS AN EDUCATIONAL LEADER.
Whereas, Mrs. Carlretta P. Wright is one of South Carolina's most distinguished educational leaders; and
Whereas, she is a native of Charleston, received her B.S. from South Carolina State University, her Master's of Education from the College of Charleston, and completed post graduate work at The Citadel; and
Whereas, she began her educational career as a teacher at Wilmot J. Fraser Elementary School in Charleston in 1964, continued there as a Chapter 1 Coordinator from 1975 until 1978, and served in that capacity at James Simons Elementary School from 1978 until 1982; and
Whereas, Mrs. Wright implemented the first Chapter 1 school-wide program for the State of South Carolina; and
Whereas, she became the principal at Wilmot J. Fraser Elementary School in 1982, and in 1991 Area Superintendent for District #23, serving in that capacity until her retirement in January, 1999; and
Whereas, she also devoted her efforts to many other educational programs, such as adult education, continuing education, curriculum writing, and summer enrichment; and
Whereas, she has been recognized with numerous awards for her outstanding service, including a TWIN award, a Sea Island Branch NAACP Community award, an Outstanding Service Recognition, and an Outstanding Educator Award; and
Whereas, Mrs. Wright is an active member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, has served as secretary for the church, and is currently chairperson of the Trustee Board; and
Whereas, in addition to her exemplary career, she is the mother of three bright and successful children. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate hereby commend and thank Mrs. Carlretta P. Wright for her outstanding career as an educational leader, and for her dedicated and loyal service to the community and to the State of South Carolina, and extend their best wishes to Mrs. Wright upon her retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Wright.
