A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MARVIN CHERNOFF FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT AND RECORD OF PUBLIC SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY, COLUMBIA, AND THE GREATER COLUMBIA AREA, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON THE OCCASION OF HIS BEING NAMED BY THE GREATER COLUMBIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AS AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR FOR 1999.

Whereas, the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce has named Marvin Chernoff the 1999 Ambassador of the Year, the selection being based on demonstrated leadership, dedication, and community services above and beyond professional career responsibilities that result in enhanced quality of life for the citizens and residents of Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry, and Richland counties; and

Whereas, since founding Chernoff/Silver & Associates in 1974, Mr. Chernoff strived tirelessly for more than twenty years to ensure the success of projects and initiatives that he believes benefit and enhance the community and state. The agency has evolved from a two-person political consulting practice to a fifty-two million dollar, full-service advertising and public relations firm. Chernoff/Silver & Associates has grown to become the state's largest advertising and public relations firm and employs ninety-five persons in their Columbia, Orlando, and Hilton Head offices; and

Whereas, Marvin Chernoff's track record for public service is unparalleled. Over the years, he has donated dozens of hours, month after month, to committees and projects that have moved Columbia forward in education, career opportunities, health care, economic development, and in the performing and visual arts. He has caused thousands of Chernoff/Silver & Associates staff hours to be devoted to help Columbia area community organizations and projects including, but not limited to, the United Way, Columbia City Ballet, the Columbia Museum of Art, Vista Lights, the Cultural Council of Lexington and Richland Counties, Art in Public Places and many, many more similar organizations and projects that have all endured to the benefit of the Greater Columbia area; and

Whereas, Marvin Chernoff has devoted more than twenty years of his life in efforts to improve the perception the people of Columbia, the State, and the nation have of the City of Columbia and the Greater Columbia area. He has worked closely with the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce for more than fifteen years, serving on the board as vice chairman of the communications committee, and on a task force charged with developing tourism in the Greater Columbia area. Most recently, he developed the "It's Happening Now" theme to create new energy for convention and tourism marketing. With Chernoff's vision, talent, and leadership, this new theme is being integrated with a variety of organizations, such as the Cultural Council, the River Alliance, and City Center; and

Whereas, having clearly demonstrated the leadership, dedication, and commitment to public service that has benefited all who live and work in the Greater Columbia area so as to prompt a recent statement by Columbia's Mayor, Bob Coble, "Marvin Chernoff's involvement in business and community has helped plant the seeds that transformed Columbia into a model city". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Marvin Chernoff for his outstanding commitment and record of public service to his community, Columbia, and the Greater Columbia area, and congratulate him on the occasion of his being named by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce as Ambassador of the Year for 1999; and

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Marvin Chernoff of Columbia.
