TO WELCOME THE HONORABLE PETER BEATTIE, THE PREMIER OF THE AUSTRALIAN STATE OF QUEENSLAND, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS VISIT TO THE PALMETTO STATE FOR THE PURPOSE OF SIGNING A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH SOUTH CAROLINA COVERING TRADE, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND A SISTER-STATE RELATIONSHIP, AND TO EXTEND TO HIM THE PRIVILEGE OF THE FLOOR OF THE SENATE ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 1999, BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 11 A.M. AND NOON FOR THE PURPOSE OF ADDRESSING THE SENATE AND RECEIVING A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION.
Whereas, the members of the Senate and all South Carolinians are deeply appreciative to the Honorable Peter Beattie for his commitment to international relations and economic development both in his native Australia and elsewhere, including South Carolina; and
Whereas, Mr. Beattie, who is a native of Sydney, Australia, holds the degrees of B.A., L.L.B., and M.A. (Research) from the University of Queensland, Australia, and is married and the father of three children; and
Whereas, Mr. Beattie was sworn in as the Premier of the Australian State of Queensland on June 25, 1998; and
Whereas, Mr. Beattie was elected to the Queensland Parliament as the Member for Brisbane Central in 1989, and Mr. Beattie has held numerous high-ranking positions of government authority including Chairman, Criminal Justice Committee; Minister for Health; and Shadow Minister for Economic and Trade Development; and
Whereas, Mr. Beattie is the author of two books, In The Arena and The Year of the Dangerous Ones, and he is the member of numerous professional, social and community clubs and associations. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate thank the Honorable Peter Beattie, the Premier of the Australian State of Queensland, on behalf of all South Carolinians for his leadership and interest in international relations and economic development, and pursuant to Rule 35, extend the privilege of the floor of the Senate to him between the hours of 11 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, May 12, 1999.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Peter Beattie.
