EXPRESSING THE CONCERN OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT THE LANDMARK MURAL OF HEISMAN WINNER GEORGE ROGERS HAS BEEN DISMANTLED AND URGING THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO DEVELOP AN APPROPRIATELY DISTINGUISHED TRIBUTE TO THIS PROUD MOMENT IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S COLLEGIATE FOOTBALL TRADITION.
Whereas, University of South Carolina Gamecock running back George Rogers was honored as the most outstanding college football player in 1980 and was awarded the Heisman Memorial Trophy by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City; and
Whereas, George Rogers is the only collegiate football player in South Carolina ever to be recognized as the best in the nation; and
Whereas, that distinction places him in the illustrious ranks of Michigan's Tom Harmon, Army's Doc Blanchard, Notre Dame's Paul Hornung, Navy's Roger Staubach, Ohio State's Archie Griffin, and, more recently, Marcus Allen, Herschel Walker, Doug Flutie, Barry Sanders, and Ricky Williams; and
Whereas, George Rogers was chosen for the first team on all the recognized All-American teams in 1980; and
Whereas, he led the NCAA Division IA in rushing that year; and
Whereas, he was the first selection in the National Football League draft, starring for the New Orleans Saints before moving on to the Washington Redskins; and
Whereas, in 1997, George Rogers was elected to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, his athletic prowess and his beaming smile have brought great honor and pride to the University of South Carolina and to this State; and
Whereas, a mural painted on the wall of the old Booker T. Washington High School gym on Blossom Street in Columbia has been the sole public tribute to this memorable man and moment in USC and South Carolina history; and
Whereas, that mural has been demolished with no plans to permanently honor South Carolina's lone Heisman winner in an exclusive manner. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly do hereby express their concern that the landmark mural of Heisman winner George Rogers has been dismantled and urge the University of South Carolina to develop an appropriately distinguished tribute to this proud moment in the State of South Carolina's collegiate football tradition.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the University of South Carolina's President John Palms and Athletic Director Mike McGee.
