A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MISS ELIZABETH ELLISON OF PICKENS COUNTY FOR HER DEDICATION TO THE EDUCATION OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE AND HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PRESERVATION OF OUR NATURAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCES, AND TO DEDICATE THE CHEROKEE FOOTHILLS VISITORS CENTER IN HER HONOR.

Whereas, Elizabeth Ellison was a classroom, music and physical education teacher in the Greenville School System for 35 years, a life member of the National Education Association, past president of the Greenville County Education Association; and

Whereas, Miss Ellison was the first South Carolina State Park Naturalist, beginning service at Table Rock State Park in 1952; and

Whereas, Miss Ellison founded Camp Oolenoy in 1952, for Greenville Junior High School students on land she owned; and

Whereas, in 1990, Miss Ellison donated Camp Oolenoy lands and buildings, including her home, historic Roper House, to the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism; and

Whereas, Miss Ellison's generous gift is a continuation of her lifetime dedication to education and the conservation of our natural resources; and

Whereas, Miss Ellison's contribution to the citizens of South Carolina will ensure that this area will be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, publicly recognize and pay tribute to Miss Elizabeth Ellison, and by this resolution officially designate the Cherokee Foothills Visitors Center in her honor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Elizabeth Ellison.
