EXPRESSING THE SINCERE DESIRE OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE CONGREGATION OF THE BROOKLAND BAPTIST CHURCH UPON THE OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF THE NEW EDIFICE IN WEST COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, WHICH HAS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE A SPECIAL BLESSING TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Brookland Baptist Church, founded originally in the late 1880's as a weekly home-based prayer service, has evolved from its first wooden structure with no electricity for light and heat to a five million dollar sanctuary, and a significant source of community pride in West Columbia, South Carolina; and
Whereas, Brookland Baptist Church, led through the years by Pastors Brown, Sims, White, Holloway, Norris, Freeman, Marsh, McIlwain and finally Rev. Doctor Charles B. Jackson, Jr., has expanded its budget to a staggering $1.7 million and its congregation to more than 3,500; and
Whereas, the Rev. Doctor Charles B. Jackson, Jr., just out of high school when he began to serve Brookland Baptist Church, energized the church with his youth and vision and led the church in its biggest expansion thus far; and
Whereas, Brookland Baptist Church has demonstrated its complete dedication to community service through fifty-eight ministries, the establishment of an independent human services agency called the Brookland Foundation, and the creation of a federal tax-exempt credit union to continue the process of rebuilding the economic infrastructure of the community; and
Whereas, Brookland Baptist Church has used its prior location on Monticello Street as a child development and learning center, and after the most recent expansion the existing building will continue to serve the congregation for smaller services, choir rehearsals, Children's Church, dressing rooms, Sunday School, and a fellowship hall; and
Whereas, the Brookland Baptist Church has reached great heights from its humble beginnings and proudly holds itself out as "The Church that Edifies God and Serves Humanity" and fully expects to fulfill its responsibility for many years as a spiritual resource for the community. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, hereby recognize the July 25, 1999 dedication of Brookland Baptist Church's new edifice and wish it many more years of "Glorifying God, Edifying Humanity, and Serving Community."
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Brookland Baptist Church.
