APPLAUDING THE ACE CLUB OF MANNING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN CLARENDON COUNTY FOR ITS OUTSTANDING EFFORTS IN CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND CONGRATULATING THE CLUB MEMBERS ON THEIR RECOGNITION AS CHAMPIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT FOR 1998 AND 1999 AND AS WINNERS OF THE 1999 EAGLES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD.
Whereas, the ACE Club was founded at Manning Elementary School in Clarendon County three years ago by Cathy Starnes, a special education resource teacher; and
Whereas, the third and fourth grade club members and their sponsors are Always Concerned about the Earth; and
Whereas, their outstanding environmental efforts over the past three years included:
* broadcasted a monthly news show to the school highlighting environmental issues, giving book reviews, performing environmental science experiments, and hosting environmental guest speakers; *
* wrote a petition, collected over six hundred signatures, and spoke at a Clarendon County Council meeting in an effort to get the county's dumps and recycling centers cleaned up and updated; *
* checked the water quality of Manning Elementary's school pond by identifying organisms living there and determining oxygen levels; *
* planted a butterfly garden in the front of Manning Elementary with the help of Master Gardeners, Vicki Walker and Kimberly Land; *
* picked up trash at TawCaw Park; *
* maintained worm bins and a compost pile; *
* collected and shredded newspapers to be sold to farmers for animal bedding and stalls; *
* performed a musical play, Evergreen, Everblue, for parents and students at Manning Elementary; and *
Whereas, as a result of their dedication to the preservation of the environment, the ACE Club members were recognized in 1998 and in 1999 as Champions of the Environment by WIS-TV, Union Camp, DuPont, and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and as winners of the 1999 SCANA Eagles Environmental Award. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina hereby applauds the ACE Club of Manning Elementary School in Clarendon County for its outstanding efforts in caring for the environment and congratulates the club members on their recognition as Champions of the Environment for 1998 and 1999 and as winners of the 1999 Eagles Environmental Award.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Cathy Starnes at Manning Elementary School on behalf of the ACE Club.
