A BILL

TO AMEND CHAPTER 25, TITLE 59 OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA CODE OF LAW, 1976, RELATING TO TEACHERS, BY ADDING SECTION 59-25-540 SO AS TO ESTABLISH A DRESS CODE FOR TEACHERS, TEACHING ASSISTANTS, AND SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS IN THE STATE'S PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Chapter 25, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-25-540. On or after the effective date of this section, the South Carolina Board of Education must enact a dress code for all persons employed as teachers, teaching assistants, or substitute teachers in the public school system of this State. The code guidelines must be designed to compliment the learning environment in the classroom setting by ensuring that professionalism is maintained through appropriate work attire. At the beginning of each school year all teachers employed by the district must be provided a copy of the district's dress code and a copy must be maintained at the district office. All teaching assistants and substitute teachers must be provided a copy of the dress code at least twenty-four hours prior to entering the classroom in their official capacity.

Each district must also establish appropriate sanctions for persons failing or refusing to comply with the dress code requirements and provide an appeal process for any persons sanctioned as a result of such failure or refusal."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
