A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

MEMORIALIZING THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR TO RECOGNIZE THE EDISTO TRIBE OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOR PURPOSES OF ALL FEDERAL PROGRAMS OPERATED BY THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS FOR NATIVE AMERICANS.

Whereas, the area comprising the territory of the State of South Carolina has been the home of Indian tribes and peoples before colonial times; and

Whereas, the Edisto Indian Tribe has maintained its cultural distinctiveness and has greatly enriched the State's history and culture; and

Whereas, the Edisto Indian Tribe maintains an active governing body consisting of a chief, vice chief, and nine tribal council members; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the State of South Carolina to request the acknowledgement and recognition of the identity of the Edisto Indian Tribe. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly, by this resolution, memorializes the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the United States Department of the Interior to recognize the Edisto Indian Tribe whose members now reside in Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, and Charleston Counties.

Be it further resolved that the provisions of this resolution are effective only for the purposes of eligibility of any programs for Native Americans after this resolution has been adopted.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of the Interior.
