REQUESTING THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO DESIGNATE THE BRIDGE ON S.C. 52 NORTH OF CHERAW IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY AS THE "GILBERT 'GIL' FRANKLIN HALMA BRIDGE."
Whereas, Patrolman First Class Gilbert "Gil" Franklin Halma, an officer with the Cheraw Police Department, was killed June 26, 1998, in an accident on Highway 52 north of Cheraw, while answering a call for help; and
Whereas, the citizens of Cheraw and the Cheraw Police Department suffered a great loss in the death of Patrolman First Class Halma; and
Whereas, he was an excellent and dedicated officer, who joined the Cheraw Police Department as a Dispatcher in July 1996, and graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in 1997, after which he was assigned as a Shift Patrolman and a member of the Cheraw Police Department K-9 Tracking Team; and
Whereas, he joined the National Guard and was a member of the South Carolina National Guard 132nd MP Unit in Florence, and also was very active in the Chesterfield Volunteer Fire Department and the Chesterfield Rescue Squad; and
Whereas, he is survived by his wife, Maria, two brothers, two sisters, and his mother and stepfather, Mary and Frank Riley of Ruby; and
Whereas, his life of service to his community and to the State of South Carolina should be remembered. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of South Carolina request the Department of Transportation to name and appropriately sign the bridge on S.C. 52 just north of Cheraw as the "Gilbert 'Gil' Franklin Halma Bridge."
Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and the family of Gilbert "Gil" Franklin Halma.
