A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE WILLIAM F. "BILL" DAVIS OF AYNOR IN HORRY COUNTY ON HIS PASSING AND EXPRESSING THEIR APPRECIATION FOR HIS LIFELONG DEDICATION TO THE SERVICE OF HIS FELLOW SOUTH CAROLINIANS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly sadly note the passing on June 15, 2000, of William F. "Bill" Davis of Aynor in Horry County; and

Whereas, in the eighty-five years allotted him, Bill Davis worked tirelessly for the betterment of his community, state, and nation; and

Whereas, his public spiritedness was exemplified by his service on the Horry County Board of Education from July 1953, through November 1982, with the additional responsibility of board chairman beginning in 1954, one year after he joined the board through his retirement in 1982; and

Whereas, that service to the cause of public education in Horry County brought him the South Carolina School Board Association Distinguished Service Award for his dedication and integrity in an office that all recognize as one of the most difficult in all of public service in its challenges; and

Whereas, Mr. Davis was devoted to South Carolina agriculture as evidenced by his service as president of the Horry-Conway County Farm Bureau from 1970 through 1995, as a member of the South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation Board of Directors from 1990 through 2000, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company and the South Carolina Farm Bureau Service Corporation from 1993 to 2000; and

Whereas, his efforts through the Farm Bureau on behalf of the state's agricultural community brought him the South Carolina Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award in 1979; and

Whereas, as a devoted lay leader in the Aynor United Methodist Church, serving on boards and in various offices, he served the denomination more widely as a member of the United Methodist College Board of Higher Education; and

Whereas, his devotion to the cause of higher education led to his efforts in the founding of Coastal Carolina University, his membership on that institution's board, and, in 1997, a honorary doctorate from it in recognition of his efforts; and

Whereas, his community service extended to his membership on the Conway Hospital Board, as a member of the Conway Hospital Foundation, and as a director of the First Citizens Bank; and

Whereas, the Aynor Lions Club, in 1974, awarded him the Lions Club Distinguished Service Award and, in 1994, the Lions International honored him with the Melvin Jones Award for Humanitarian Service. Two years later, in 1996, the Conway Chamber of Commerce bestowed on him the Laverne H. Creel Lifetime Achievement Award; and

Whereas, in a life characterized by service, no award pleased him more or speaks more about him than the Silver Beaver Award bestowed on him by the Boy Scouts of America; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might note the passing of so distinguished a son of South Carolina and extend their heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends, especially his widow, Erma Lee Thomlinson Davis and son, W. Frank Davis, Jr. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, note the passing of William F. "Bill" Davis of Aynor in Horry County and express their deepest sympathies to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Erma Lee Thomlinson Davis.
