TO RECOGNIZE THE ORANGEBURG PREPARATORY SCHOOL BOYS' TRACK TEAM ON ITS CONVINCING CAPTURE OF THE 2002 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION STATE TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP, OUT-DISTANCING ITS CLOSEST CONTENDER BY TWENTY-NINE POINTS.
Whereas, the Orangeburg Preparatory School boys' track team ran away with the 2002 State Independent Athletic Association track crown on May 7 at the Heathwood Hall track; and
Whereas, the Indians grabbed a quick lead in the first few events and never relinquished the nearly 30-point margin; and
Whereas, they were awarded the title trophy based on their final total of 130 points; and
Whereas, the cindermen triumphantly traveled back to Orangeburg with the first OPS state track title since 1996; and
Whereas, seniors Brian Barnwell, Darrell Booker, and Dargan Gore led the talented team to the crown, as Barnwell left the field in the dust with his first in the 800 meters, Booker triple-jumped over the competition for a first place spot, and Gore took a third in the triple; and
Whereas, other first-place ribbons went to Sam Haddock in the discus, Will Whetstone in the 110-meter high hurdles, and Britton Whetsell in the high jump; and
Whereas, the Indians' Omar Singleton and Bert Shuler took second and third in the team's sweep of the high jump event; and
Whereas, other second and third-place efforts by dedicated tracksters padded the Indian total; and
Whereas, Coach Don Shelley's team evidenced its real strength--its team spirit--in the 4x400 relay, as the entire team positioned itself around the track to cheer on the relay participants in one last event; and
Whereas, it is a privilege for the South Carolina Senate to recognize the dedication and teamwork of the 2002 OPS track team. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate recognize the Orangeburg Preparatory School boys' track team on its convincing capture of the 2002 South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association state track championship, out-distancing its closest contender by twenty-nine points.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Shelley.
