TO HONOR JAMES B. HUNT, JR., OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY, BAND DIRECTOR EXTRAORDINAIRE, ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE J. B. HUNT SCHOLARSHIP FUND IN RECOGNITION OF HIS NUMEROUS YEARS AS BAND DIRECTOR IN THE ORANGEBURG COUNTY SCHOOLS AND HIS INESTIMABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MUSICAL LIVES OF COUNTLESS STUDENTS OVER THE YEARS.
Whereas, it is fitting that young talents should have the opportunity to pursue their music in the name of Hall of Fame Band Director James B. Hunt, Jr.; and
Whereas, James B. Hunt, Jr., began his own musical career playing a toy clarinet in the eighth grade at his Greenville school boys' room and a week later he was playing alto tuba with his school band's halftime show; and
Whereas, that exceptional musical talent and an academic effort worthy of finishing as Salutatorian of Sterling High School Class of 1942 class earned him a band scholarship to South Carolina State College; and
Whereas, the Omega Psi Phi inductee made Orangeburg his home, earning the Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and the Masters degree in Education, and studying trumpet under the late Frank Motley and playing with the State College Collegians; and
Whereas, his contributions to music and to the young people who shared his talents and dreams include: the first and only band director at Wilkinson High School, the first band director at Sharperson and Belleville Junior High Schools and Brookdale Middle School, and organizer and director of the first band at the newly merged Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School; and
Whereas, he was President of the Band Masters Association for three years and Band Director of the Year in 1962; and
Whereas, more than two hundred fifty Orangeburg young people participated in All-State Bands while under the tutelage of James B. Hunt, Jr., and many huge names in music owe their careers and reputations to him including: Johnny Williams, member of the Count Basie Band since 1970; Shellie Thomas, a retired music teacher in Los Angeles and currently the leader of the Original Honey Drippers Band; Horace Ott, Broadway composer and arranger and sometimes conductor for the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin; three of the famous Jarvis Brothers and Jarvis sister, Priscilla; and 2000 Hall of Fame inductee Dwight McMillan; and
Whereas, no one is more aware of his great contributions than his biggest fans, his wife of fifty years, the former Lerlene Hilton, and their two daughters, Deborah Hunt Woods and Dr. Marilyn Hunt Alim, his eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, he is being honored with the establishment of the J. B. Hunt Scholarship Fund and feted at a Musical Scholarship Banquet in his name and through this scholarship he will continue to ensure the fruition of musical talents in Orangeburg County and this State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the House of Representatives honor James B. Hunt, Jr., of Orangeburg County, band director extraordinaire, on the establishment of the J. B. Hunt Scholarship Fund in recognition of his numerous years as band director in the Orangeburg County schools and his inestimable contributions to the musical lives of countless students over the years.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Hunt.
