A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND WILLIAM SHEPARD MCCANINCH FOR HIS LONG AND OUTSTANDING CAREER AS PROFESSOR OF LAW AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO WISH HIM HEALTH AND HAPPINESS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, Professor McAninch began his teaching career at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1969, after graduating from Tulane University in 1962 with a B.A. degree with honors in sociology, later earning his LL.M. at Yale University and his LL.B. at the University of Arkansas; and

Whereas, Professor McAninch has educated and influenced generations of students at for the past thirty years including the students of the University of South Carolina School of Law for the past twenty eight years; and

Whereas, Professor McAninch has been the Solomon Blatt Professor of Law since 1980, a professor from 1976 to 1988, an associate professor from 1972-1976, and a assistant professor from 1969 to 1972 at the University of South Carolina School of Law; and

Whereas, during these years, Professor McAninch taught courses on Constitutional Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law, and other related courses and seminars; and

Whereas, Professor McAninch authored several books including Guide to South Carolina Criminal Law and Procedure and The Criminal Law in South Carolina, and many articles in numerous law reviews including the South Carolina Law Review and other journals including the South Carolina Lawyer; and

Whereas, Professor McAninch received the Law School Faculty Scholarship Award in 1983 and again in 1993, and the G.G. Dowling Award for Outstanding Law School Faculty Member in 1991; and

Whereas, Professor McAninch has provided an invaluable service to the General Assembly throughout the years by providing the General Assembly with his expert knowledge in the area of criminal law; and

Whereas, because Professor McAninch has given so much of his time and talent to the field of criminal law throughout his many years of teaching at the University of South Carolina School of Law, the members of the Senate pause in their deliberations so that they may honor and commend his dedication and thank him for all that he has done for this field, the University of South Carolina School of Law, and the people of this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend and honor William Shepard McAninch of Columbia, South Carolina, upon his retirement from the University of South Carolina School of Law, and wish him health and happiness in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forward to Professor McAninch.
