A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-117-110 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT EFFECTIVE AT THE END OF THE 2004-2005 ACADEMIC YEAR, THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN COLUMBIA IS CLOSED, AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE MANNER IN WHICH THIS CLOSURE SHALL BE ACCOMPLISHED.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-117-110. Effective at the end of the 2004-2005 academic year, the School of Medicine at the University of South Carolina is closed. Between the effective date of this section and the date the School of Medicine is closed, the enrollment by class at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston may not increase above existing authorized levels. The board of trustees of the University of South Carolina, under the general supervision of the Commission on Higher Education, shall be responsible for implementing this closure together with a reallocation of the assets, faculty, and staff of the Medical School to the extent possible."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
