A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND BARBARA WILLIAMS JENKINS, Ph.D. FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS DEAN OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, AND FOR HER WORK TO PRESERVE BLACK HISTORY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER ON THE OCCASION OF HER INDUCTION INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA BLACK HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, Barbara Williams Jenkins was born in Union, South Carolina, graduated from Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Bennett College, the MSLS degree from the University of Illinois, conducted advanced study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Atlanta University, and Clemson University, and earned a Ph.D. in Library and Information Services in 1980 from Rutgers University; and

Whereas, Barbara Williams Jenkins began working as a librarian at South Carolina State University in 1957, became Library Director in 1962, and Dean of Library and Information Services in 1987, and served with distinction until her retirement in June 1997, and was named South Carolina State's "Dean Emeritus of Library and Information Services" at the university's February 2000 Founder's Day Program; and

Whereas, Barbara Williams Jenkins has served on the American Library Association, the Southeastern Library Association, was President of the South Carolina Library Association from 1986-87, has served on the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation, the African-American Heritage Council, was Chairperson of the ALA Black Caucus from 1984-86, a member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, is a life member of the NAACP, a board member of the Concerned Citizens for Black Higher Education in South Carolina, from 1981-85 was chairwoman of the Journalistic Board of the Coastal Times newspaper, and has served on the South Carolina African-American Heritage Council; and

Whereas, Barbara Williams Jenkins received the "Boss of the Year Award" in 1980 from the Orangeburg Chapter of Professional Secretaries International, the President's Award from the South Carolina Library Association in 1987, the South Carolina State College Distinguished Service Award in 1991, the ALA Black Caucus Recognition Award in 1991, and the First President's Service Award, South Carolina State University in 1997; and, for her many years of leadership and dedicated services has been inducted into the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, Barbara Williams Jenkins is married to Robert A. Jenkins, and they have two children, Ronald and Pamela, and five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Bennie, Robert, Ashton, and Michael, and she is a member of Williams Chapel A.M.E. Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Barbara Williams Jenkins, Ph.D. for her many years of dedicated service as Dean of Library and Information Services at South Carolina State University, and for her work to preserve black history, and to congratulate her on the occasion of her induction into the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Barbara Williams Jenkins of Union.
