TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SHOCK AND SORROW OF ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS UPON THE DEATH OF NASCAR DRIVER DALE EARNHARDT, SR., OF KANNAPOLIS, NORTH CAROLINA, WHO WAS TRAGICALLY KILLED IN A CRASH ON THE LAST LAP OF THE DAYTONA 500 ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2001.
Whereas, the members of the Senate were shocked and saddened to learn of the wreck on the last lap of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 18, 2001, which took the life of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Sr.; and
Whereas, he was one of the, if not the, greatest drivers in the history of NASCAR, who had a passionate and devoted fan following; and
Whereas, Dale Earnhardt began his stock car racing career on May 25, 1975, at the World 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, earned his first victory on April 1, 1979, at Bristol, Tennessee, won a total of seventy-six Winston Cup races, and won seven Winston Cup Championships which ties him for the most career titles ever, and is only the third driver in NASCAR history to start five hundred consecutive Winston Cup races; and
Whereas, he comes from a highly respected and much loved family of racing. His father, Ralph Earnhardt, preceded him as a highly successful NASCAR driver, and his son, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., continues to perform in an outstanding manner on the NASCAR circuit; and
Whereas, his death at the young age of forty-nine leaves a void in stock car racing which will not easily be filled. Dale Earnhardt, in addition to being such a successful driver and car owner, was also a man of character and compassion who was loved, respected, and looked up to by all those with whom he came into contact, be they family, friends, business associates, competitors, or his legion of fans; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate, by this resolution, would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to his wife, Teresa, sons Dale Jr., and Kerry, daughters Kelly and Taylor Nichole, other members of his family, and his many fans and friends upon his terrible death in this awful accident. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, on behalf of all South Carolinians, express their profound shock and sorrow upon the death of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Sr., of Kannapolis, North Carolina, who was tragically killed in a crash on the last lap of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 18, 2001.
Be it further resolved that a copy of resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Teresa Earnhardt.
