TO MARK THE PASSING OF THE LATE DR. HARRY ODELLE HARMAN, SR., FORMERLY OF LEXINGTON WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON JANUARY 11, 1969, TO FONDLY RECALL HIS MANY PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HIS TREMENDOUS CONTRIBUTION TO HIS COMMUNITY, HIS NATIVE STATE, AND THE NATION IN BUSINESS AND AS A DISTINGUISHED LEADER IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION AND TO JOIN WITH HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS IN REMEMBERING AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND SERVICE OF THIS DISTINGUISHED SOUTH CAROLINIAN AND GREAT AMERICAN.

Whereas, a distinguished South Carolinian and a great American Dr. Harry Odelle Harman, Sr., of Lexington departed this life on January 11, 1969; and

Whereas, the passage of time since Dr. Harman's death has not diminished his memory or the memory of his many fine accomplishment in business and as a leader in the field of education in the minds of those who knew and respected him, or in the hearts of his family and many friends who loved him; and

Whereas, Dr. Harman was born in 1906 in Lexington County to Clara Sons Harman and J. Arthur Harman. Dr. Harman graduated from Lexington High School in 1926, where he was a member and captain of the first football team; and

Whereas, Dr. Harman received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1929 and his masters in 1936. He received his Doctor of Laws degree from Newberry College in 1955 and did additional graduate work at Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of South Florida; and

Whereas, Dr. Harman began his career in education as a teacher at Red Bank Elementary in 1929 and became Principal in 1930. In 1932, he was elected Lexington County Superintendent of Education and in 1939, he became Superintendent of Lexington County School District One where he served until his death; and

Whereas, during his tenure in the field of education Dr. Harman was a member of many local, state, and national professional organizations. He was one of thirty men selected by the American Association of School Administrators to tour Russia in 1965 and study and observe the Russian educational system; and

Whereas, Dr. Harman was particularly involved in his community. He was Chairman of the new Lexington County Hospital, a visiting professor and a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of South Carolina, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Newberry College, on the Board of Directors of the Lexington Branch of First National Bank, President of the Lexington County Development Corporation, and founding President of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce; and

Whereas, amid his professional involvement, Dr. Harman was very involved with the Saint Stephens Lutheran Church in Lexington where he was a lifetime member, a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the official board. He also served as a member of the Board of the South Carolina Lutheran Synod, the Lowman Home, and the United Lutheran Church; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly remember the passing of Dr. Harman with deep sympathy and take this occasion to mark his passing and express thanks and appreciation for his outstanding contributions to his community, his State, and to the nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, mark the passing of the late Dr. Harry Odelle Harman, Sr., formerly of Lexington who departed this life on January 11, 1969, fondly recall his many personal accomplishments and his tremendous contribution to his community, his native State, and the nation, in business and as a distinguished leader in the field of education and join with his family and many friends in remembering and celebrating the life and service of this distinguished South Carolinian and great American.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Dr. Harry Odelle Harman, Sr., of Lexington.
