A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE COACH AND MEMBERS OF THE RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TEST ACADEMIC TEAM FOR THEIR COMMITMENT TO LEARNING AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR BECOMING TEAM WINNERS OF THE 2001 CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TEST COMPETITION.

Whereas, the Scholastic Aptitude Academic Team of Richland Northeast High School won its first-ever Class AAAA State Scholastic Aptitude Test Championship at the University of South Carolina on Wednesday March 14, 2001; and

Whereas, superbly coached and inspired by Mike McClure, and ably supported by Ralph Schmidt, Principal, and Steve Hefner, Superintendent, the Richland Northeast High School SAT Championship Team can be proud of not only being team winners of the 2001 SAT championship competition, but of the talent, academic skills, and proficiency of team members Eric Anderson, Kathryn Anderson, Molly Behymer, Beth Fadely, Andrew Friedman, Ben Kim, Sheena Lazenby, Ashley Lewis, Brigette Lindsey, Alexis Murono, James Pineda, Caleb Risher, Marissa Schein, Christine Simpson, Eric Williamson, Kathryn Willoughby, Patrick Goodman, Adams LaBorde, Sloan Lindsey, Dawn Miller, Beth Westeren, Rebecca Yuen, A. J. Alon, Rachel Brett, Park Cram, and Katie Kratsios; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Department of Education established the SAT competition in 1999 for academically gifted students; that contestants sit for a two-hour abbreviated form of the SAT to test math and verbal skills; and that South Carolina is the only State that offers a SAT competition to challenge individual students and provide academic competition between schools across the State; and

Whereas, South Carolina Education Department officials estimate more than three thousand five hundred students from one hundred fifty South Carolina high schools participated in the regional competition in January, 2001, and department officials state that six hundred students from forty-seven schools advanced to the state competition in February; and

Whereas, in addition to keeping up with academic and other extracurricular activities, the members of the 2001 Richland Northeast High School Championship SAT team worked long and hard, studying along and with Coach McClure, to prepare for the regional and statewide SAT competition, and that, upon winning the state SAT team championship, each member was awarded a hard-earned medal along with the well-deserved championship team trophy; and

Whereas, the hard work and superlative accomplishments of the Richland Northeast High School Championship SAT team are both an inspiration and source of pride to all South Carolinians, and the team members, their parents and families, their coach, and the faculty and staff of Richland Northeast High School richly deserve recognition for this outstanding achievement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the coach and members of the Richland Northeast High School Scholastic Aptitude Test Academic Team for their commitment to learning and academic excellence and congratulate them on the occasion of their becoming team winners of the 2001 Class AAAA State Championship Scholastic Aptitude Test competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Mike McClure on behalf of the members of the 2001 Class AAAA State SAT Team Champions of Richland Northeast High School of Columbia.
