A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST SUCCESSFUL AND RESPECTED ATHLETES AND COACHES, ROBERT L. "BOBBY" GILES, SR., OF COLUMBIA FOR A LIFETIME OF ACCOMPLISHMENT AND SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND STATE.

Whereas, Bobby L. Giles, Sr., of Columbia is one of South Carolina's most widely respected coaches who throughout his career was a teacher, mentor, and role model for the athletes who played under him; and

Whereas, he was an outstanding athlete at Olympia High School, where he played three sports and was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl in 1941, and he continued to excel in football at the University of South Carolina. Upon graduation from college in 1948, Bobby Giles began his exceptional career in coaching as the assistant coach at Olympia High School; and

Whereas, in 1951, he became the head coach at Olympia High School, where he coached until 1970. He developed championship teams in football, basketball, and baseball and his accomplishments over the nineteen years include one state football title, five basketball crowns, and one baseball championship and an overall won-loss record in the three sports of six hundred fifty-three wins and only two hundred eighty-one losses with four ties ; and

Whereas, he received many awards and recognitions during his coaching tenure including being named South Carolina head Shrine Bowl Coach in 1967, South Carolina All-Star Coach for football and basketball, and on July 26, 2000, Coach Giles was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, in order to get the full measure of Coach Giles, one must look beyond the seven state championships in three sports and to the many on-the-field accomplishments of the thousands of young men whose lives he touched. Throughout his career, Coach Giles has inspired the young people that he coached to high level of achievement, and he has made many other important contributions to our State; and

Whereas, it is with a sense of pride and appreciation that the Senate of South Carolina on behalf of all South Carolinians thank this wonderful man for all he has done for our State during a long and distinguished career. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, recognize and commend one of South Carolina's most successful and respected athletes and coaches, Robert L. "Bobby" Giles, Sr., of Columbia, for a lifetime of accomplishment and service to his community and State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Giles.
