A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE PAT HEWITT, OF HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL, FOR BEING NAMED NATIONAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR, AND TO THANK HER FOR HER DEDICATION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF HARTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION.

Whereas, Pat Hewitt, who was named the National Physical Education Teacher of the Year, has devoted herself to teaching physical education at Hartsville High School for the past thirty-two years and has no intentions of retiring any time soon; and

Whereas, Pat Hewitt graduated from Coker College and received her Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina, but she was initially inspired by her third grade physical education teacher, to whom she attributes her own love for her students and the teaching profession; and

Whereas, on her trail towards her current national honor, Hewitt was first named State Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year, then she was selected by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education as the Southern District High School Physical Education Educator of the Year. She endured interviews and was judged on her teaching video, biography, references, and a written assignment before being named National Physical Education Teacher of the Year; and

Whereas, Pat Hewitt emphasizes to her students that they are "Amer-I-CANS", and she teaches them that they can all learn about sports and successfully play them; and

Whereas, Pat Hewitt has created a new class at Hartsville High School called the Lifetime Education Activity Project (LEAP), which is an elective class designed to encourage students to become and remain physically active throughout their lives; and

Whereas, Pat Hewitt is much more than just a physical education teacher to her students. She is a friend with a caring attitude, and students feel comfortable going to her with any problems they may have. Students look up to her, as seventeen of her former students have gone on to become physical education teachers; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly sincerely commend Pat Hewitt of Hartsville High School for her zealous dedication not only to teaching physical education, but also to fostering the happiness of her students, both of which led her to being named National Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Pat Hewitt, of Hartsville High School, for being named National Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and to thank her for her dedication to the development of Hartsville High School students' physical education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Pat Hewitt.
