A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO NAME THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS HEADQUARTERS BUILDING THE "WILLIAM D. LEEKE BUILDING".

Whereas, William D. Leeke was the Commissioner of the South Carolina Department of Corrections from 1968 through the summer of 1987; and

Whereas, Mr. Leeke has been active in corrections since 1956 as a teacher, warden, deputy director, and commissioner. Since 1987, he has continued his professional expertise and involvement in this area; and

Whereas, during his tenure as commissioner, extensive improvements were made in the state corrections system. Mr. Leeke instituted the specialized services division that provides professional psychological treatment to inmates; he started and developed work release and pre-release programs; he instituted emergency preparedness teams and increased and improved training standards for correctional officers; and

Whereas, Mr. Leeke is well known nationally in the corrections field and has been honored with numerous national awards. He served as president of the American Correctional Association and the National Association of State Correctional Administrators; and

Whereas, Bill Leeke promoted professionalism in his chosen career and made outstanding contributions to the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the South Carolina Department of Corrections is requested to name its headquarters building located at 4444 Broad River Road in Columbia the "William D. Leeke Building".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
