TO MEMORIALIZE THE MEMORY OF UNITED STATES ARMY LIEUTENANT COLONEL GEORGE D. MARTIN III'S LIFE AND HONOR HIS ACTIONS TAKEN WHILE HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY DUTIFULLY AND COURAGEOUSLY AND EXPRESS DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY.
Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina wishes to express its deepest sympathy and most sincere condolences to the family of Lieutenant Colonel George D. Martin III, affectionately known as "Marty"; and
Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina wishes to express its great pride in the duties performed by Lieutenant Colonel Martin when he was tragically killed in a helicopter crash April 7, 2001, while looking for American's missing in action remains in Vietnam; and
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel George D. Martin III was born September 12, 1960, in Columbia, South Carolina and is a 1983 graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina; and
Whereas, the helicopter crash occurred in the Quang Bien province of Vietnam and involved members of a United States military search team seeking the remains of American MIA's. The expedition was doing advance work for a joint United States-Vietnamese effort to recover the remains of U.S. servicemen and women; and
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Martin was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York. Lieutenant Colonel Martin was the incoming detachment commander, Detachment 2, Joint Task Force Full Accounting, Hanoi; and
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Martin was in Vietnam on a two-week reconnaissance in preparation for what was to be his next assignment as a detachment commander for Joint Task Force Full Accounting. The U.S. team was making site surveys for possible excavations for American remains in central Vietnam; and
Whereas, the Full Accounting Task Force was created in 1992 in response to presidential, congressional, and public interest as well as increased opportunities for case resolution and increased willingness by the governments of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia to share information about missing Americans; and
Whereas, Alan Liotta, acting director of the POW-MIA office stated that Lieutenant Colonel Martin and the other members of the task force were among the best experts in MIA recovery the United States had, and President Bush acknowledged the great contributions made by the task force to bring closure to scores of families across America; and
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel George Martin devoted his life's work to our country and to the United States Army. In all his years of service, his happiest moments were in command of 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry. He took great pride in the battalion, its history, and its soldiers. He spoke daily of his men and their accomplishments and was deeply honored by the opportunity to serve them; and
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Martin is survived by his wife, Susan Hayes Martin, daughters Jessie and Katie, parents George and Thelma Martin and his sister Debbie Cauley; and
Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Martin has honorably served his country by doing his duty and he earned the respect of his peers, friends, family, and nation. It is most befitting that the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina pause in its deliberations to recognize the distinguished career and contributions of this fine officer and soldier. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, memorializes the memory of United States Army Lieutenant Colonel George D. Martin III's life and honor his actions taken while he served his country dutifully and courageously and expresses deepest sympathy to the members of his family.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Lieutenant Colonel Martin's wife, Susan Martin.
