A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. LUNS RICHARDSON, PRESIDENT OF MORRIS COLLEGE IN SUMTER, FOR HAVING SERVED AS THE COLLEGE'S PRESIDENT FOR TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS, THUS ATTAINING THE STATURE OF BEING THE LONGEST SERVING COLLEGE PRESIDENT IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Dr. Luns Richardson is a South Carolina native, having grown up on a farm in Hartsville, where he was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Butler High School. He graduated with honors from Benedict College in 1949 and did his graduate work at Columbia University, South Carolina State College, Rutgers University, and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville; and

Whereas, his career path in education has been very distinguished. Dr. Richardson held the position of principal at St. Helena High School in Charleston and Wilson High School in Florence. He served in several joint positions at Benedict College and Allen University before being appointed acting president of Benedict College for sixteen months. After serving as the executive vice president of Voorhees College for the 1973-1974 school year, he became president of Morris College on July 1, 1974, where he has remained ever since; and

Whereas, under Dr. Richardson's leadership, Morris College has made tremendous strides. The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Its enrollment has increased from four hundred fifty to over one thousand students. Morris College's endowment has grown in excess of three million dollars and it is a member of the United Negro College Fund; and

Whereas, Dr. Richardson has received more than one hundred awards and honors over his impressive career. He has been recognized for his dedication to strong educational values by being awarded the State's highest honor, the Order of the Palmetto, and by his induction into the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, Dr. Richardson's lengthy tenure as president of Morris College is evidence of his strong work ethic and his success at meeting challenges and turning them into opportunities for growth. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That its members, by this resolution, commend Dr. Luns Richardson, President of Morris College in Sumter, for having served as the college's president for twenty-seven years, thus attaining the stature of being the longest serving college president in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Luns Richardson.
