TO COMMEND JOHN BENNETTE CORNWELL III, OF GREENVILLE, FOR HIS SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE LEGISLATIVE AUDIT COUNCIL FROM MAY 10, 1995 TO JUNE 30, 2001, AND TO RECOGNIZE THAT DURING HIS TERM ON THE COUNCIL, THIRTY-EIGHT AUDITS WERE PUBLISHED AND THE COUNCIL RECEIVED NATIONAL AWARDS FOR ITS WORK.
Whereas, John Bennette Cornwell III of Greenville was born and raised in the Upstate. He attended public schools in Chesnee and Saxon and graduated from Spartanburg High School. He graduated from Clemson University in 1970. Several other members of the family, including Bennette's father, attended Clemson. The tradition of attending Clemson will be carried forward by Bennette's daughter, Alison, who will start her college education in the fall of 2001; and
Whereas, Bennette worked with Exxon for seventeen years. In 1987, he joined Harley and Harrison, Inc. This company is a manufacturer's representative for textile machinery parts which are sold to mills in the Southeast, Texas, Mexico, and Canada. Bennette has owned the company and served as its president since 1995; and
Whereas, Bennette is married to the former Stephanie Lewis of Sylvania, Georgia. They have two children, Lane, age 24, of Charleston, and Alison, age 18; and
Whereas, in the Spring of 1995, the General Assembly elected John Bennette Cornwell III to the Legislative Audit Council. During the past six years, he has overseen the staff and work of the Council publishing thirty-eight audits of state agencies. During this tenure, the Council earned from the National Conference of State Legislature's National Legislative Program Evaluation Society an impact award for its audit on "Auto Insurance in South Carolina", and an impact award for "A Management Review of the Department of Natural Resources"; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives is extremely grateful to have citizens like Bennette Cornwell who sacrifice their time and contribute to the public good by serving in important positions such as on the Legislative Audit Council. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend John Bennette Cornwell III, of Greenville, for his service as a member of the Legislative Audit Council from May 10, 1995 to June 30, 2001, and recognize that during his term on the Council, thirty-eight audits were published and the Council received national awards for its work.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to John Bennette Cornwell III.
