A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND EXTEND THE BEST WISHES OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO REVEREND KIPPIE C. BROWN UPON HIS INSTALLATION AS PASTOR OF THE NEW PROVIDENCE BAPTIST CHURCH OF DARLINGTON ON JUNE 24, 2001, AND TO COMMEND THE NEW PROVIDENCE BAPTIST CHURCH FOR ITS LONG HISTORY OF MINISTRY AND SERVICE TO ITS CONGREGATION, COMMUNITY, AND THIS STATE.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to learn of the upcoming installation of Reverend Kippie C. Brown as Pastor of the New Providence Baptist Church in Darlington, South Carolina on June 24, 2001; and

Whereas, Reverend Brown follows a long tradition of strong and active pastors who have built and rebuilt the church from the ground up beginning with its inception in 1881 under a tent of bush arbors and pine straw located near Highway 34, the location that would later become the site of the present church; and the founders of the church family included Silas Lee, Eli Wingate, Abney Williams, Dick Ponsey, and Henry Brockington; and

Whereas, the bush arbor was soon replaced by a log cabin and through their prayers and hard work the faithful members of this new congregation were able to purchase the land they had established their church on; and

Whereas, Reverend S. Hinnigan was elected the first pastor of New Providence Baptist Church and through his dedication and leadership, a deacon and a Trustee Board were established along with a choir and a club. Reverend Hinnigan passed after ten years of service, leaving his vision and hopes for future growth and joy for his beloved church in the strong and willing hands of his flock; and

Whereas, the Reverend Boykin Lomak served as pastor for the New Providence congregation until his death in 1898, at which time he was succeeded by Reverend I. W. Williams, who led the growing church until 1901; and

Whereas, successive pastors of New Providence Baptist Church have all been great leaders and ministers of the gospel, particularly Reverend Judge Pearson of Timmonsville, South Carolina, who returned to the church in 1951 to serve "until death do us part"; and it was under Reverend Pearson's forty-six years of guidance that the church building was rebuilt after a devastating fire, and significant improvements were made to the structural and spiritual body of the church; and

Whereas, in 1992, following the death of Reverend Pearson, Reverend Coleman Cannon, Sr., was elected to lead New Providence and through his leadership, the prayer of its members, and the blessings of God, the church grew physically and spiritually, and increased the number of worship services from every other Sunday to every Sunday; and

Whereas, New Providence Baptist Church, now located in Darlington, South Carolina, is one of the most successful ministries in the State with growing membership rolls, expanding facilities, and increasing service to all of God's creation; the church having been forged by faith, sustained through the years by faith, and by faith, it has continued to move forward. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House, by this resolution, express congratulations and extend the best wishes of the South Carolina House of Representatives to Reverend Kippie C. Brown upon his installation as pastor of the New Providence Baptist Church of Darlington on June 24, 2001, and to commend the New Providence Baptist Church for its long history of ministry and service to its congregation, community, and this State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Kippie C. Brown, Pastor of New Providence Baptist Church of Darlington.
