A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DWIGHT E. WOODS OF MAULDIN FOR HIS EARLY AND LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND FOR MANY YEARS OF SUPPORT OF COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES, YOUTH PROGRAMS, AND CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS IN THE PERFORMING ARTS IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON A LIFETIME OF OUTSTANDING PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS THAT SERVE AS A BEACON AND INSPIRATION TO OTHERS.

Whereas, Dwight E. Woods has been exceptionally active in enriching the lives of young people in Greenville and throughout the State of South Carolina in the area of the performing arts for the past twenty-five years; and

Whereas, Dwight Woods spent the first part of his life in Birmingham, Alabama, the tenth of eleven children of the late Reverend Abraham Woods, Sr. and Maggie Woods. He became extremely involved in the Civil Rights Movement, to the point of sacrificing his freedom at the age of fifteen for the cause to which he was deeply devoted. He went on to receive a B.A. Degree from Miles College, Birmingham, where he was instrumental in starting the first contemporary gospel choir on campus; and

Whereas, after his two-year tour in the United States Army, Mr. Woods moved to Chicago and began work on the production of an original musical entitled "Metamorphosis". This work led him to Greenville where he continued to provide enlightenment, inspiration, and entertainment to the community at large; and

Whereas, the honors and awards Dwight E. Woods has received over the past twenty-one years, too numerous to name, include recognition from musical societies, television stations, colleges, and the City of Greenville, to name just a few. He has also been supportive of various community activities and church organizations which have greatly impacted the lives of young people of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Woods' versatile gifts have allowed him to compose and develop both secular and gospel music and musicals, which are entertaining as well as inspirational. For sixteen years he has worked with the Phillis Wheatley Repertory Theatre where he identifies and nurtures the talents of young adolescents, daring them to dream and achieve; and

Whereas, Dwight E. Woods has also performed and conducted musicals and theatrical workshops in several upstate school districts: Clemson University, Furman University, University of South Carolina, University of Colorado, The Highlander Research Center in Tennessee, and many others; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is grateful for people like Dwight E. Woods who are positive role models and are actively seeking to make the State a better place by involving our children in fine arts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Dwight E. Woods of Mauldin for his early and lifelong commitment to the civil rights movement and for many years of support of community activities, youth programs, and church organizations in the performing arts in South Carolina, and congratulate him on a lifetime of outstanding personal achievements that serve as a beacon and inspiration to others.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dwight E. Woods of Mauldin.
