TO COMMEND BOB JONES UNIVERSITY OF GREENVILLE FOR ITS ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, ITS COMMITMENT TO ITS PRINCIPLES, AND ITS CONTINUING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ECONOMIC, CULTURAL AND SOCIAL HEALTH OF THE UPSTATE, TO NOTE THAT IN THE YEAR 2002 BOB JONES UNIVERSITY WILL CELEBRATE THE SEVENTY-FIFTH YEAR OF ITS FOUNDING, AND TO WISH THE UNIVERSITY, ITS TRUSTEES, FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS, ALUMNI, AND SUPPORTERS EVERY SUCCESS IN THE YEARS TO COME.
Whereas, Bob Jones University of Greenville is the largest private liberal arts institution of higher learning in South Carolina. Founded in 1927, Bob Jones College moved to its newly constructed campus in Greenville and became Bob Jones University in October 1947; and
Whereas, since moving to Greenville, Bob Jones University has grown in facilities, enrollment, and scope. Today the university offers more than one hundred seventy undergraduate and graduate majors to more than five thousand students each year; and
Whereas, the over five thousand students who currently attend Bob Jones University come from all fifty states in the Union and over forty foreign countries. There are over seventy-five thousand graduates and former students. In addition to the ministerial students, missionary trainees, and other students enrolled in the School of Religion, students prepare for various professions in the School of Education, School of Business Administration, the School of Fine Arts, and the College of Arts and Sciences; and
Whereas, the faculty of Bob Jones University is an outstanding asset of the school. There are two hundred ninety-five full-time and one hundred three part-time faculty members. The majority of the faculty has completed postgraduate work and twenty-four percent have earned doctoral degrees. The faculty-student ratio is one to twelve; and
Whereas, many graduates of Bob Jones University have distinguished themselves in careers serving as college presidents, executives of large corporations, and as elected public officials. Bob Jones graduates serving in the South Carolina General Assembly in this session include Senator Danny Verdin and Representative Mike Easterday. The late Speaker Pro Tem Terry Haskins, who served in the General Assembly from 1987 until his passing in October 2000, graduated from Bob Jones University in 1976 with a bachelor of science degree and in 1978 with a master of arts degree. Thousands of Bob Jones alumni lead churches and ministries across the United States; and
Whereas, Bob Jones University is famous worldwide for its Museum and Gallery. The museum and gallery contain an internationally known collection of the finest religious art in America and a collection of baroque painting, Dutch, Spanish, and Italian, dating from the period 1590 to 1750, which is second to none. The museum and gallery annually attract thousands of visitors, young and old, who contribute to the economic well being of the Greenville community; and
Whereas, over forty percent of the student body of Bob Jones University actively volunteer weekly in various community projects in Greenville, from the Meals on Wheels program, the Greenville Special Olympics, to the program called Putting Families First; and
Whereas, Bob Jones University Press, founded in 1973, is the largest publisher of educational materials in the State. It provides materials to over one hundred fourteen countries around the world. Over seven hundred fifty thousand students use the University Press curricula each school day. In addition, twenty-five thousand students around the world participate in technologically advanced distance learning programs offered by the University; and
Whereas, the Bob Jones students, faculty, staff, and visitors contribute over seventy million dollars annually to the local economy. The importance of Bob Jones University to the economic, cultural, and social health of the Upstate must not be underestimated; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper that the members of the General Assembly recognize that the contributions made by Bob Jones University strengthen the fiber of society in the Upstate and in South Carolina, and recognize that the school remains faithful to its original charter and purpose. Now therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring,
That the members of the General Assembly commend Bob Jones University of Greenville for its academic excellence, its commitment to its principles, and its continuing contributions to the economic, cultural, and social health of the Upstate, and the members note that in the year 2002 Bob Jones University will celebrate the seventy-fifth year of its founding, and, further, the members wish the university, its trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters every success in the years to come.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the president of Bob Jones University, Bob Jones III.
