TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF JOHN M. BRABHAM, SR., OF SUMTER ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2001, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of astute businessman, community leader, and loyal friend, John M. Brabham, Sr., of Sumter, on August 9, 2001, at the age of seventy-seven; and

Whereas, Mr. Brabham was born and raised in Dalzell and graduated from Hillcrest High School. He courageously served in the Army during World War II and in the Korean conflict; and

Whereas, Mr. Brabham opened his successful real estate firm, Prudential John M. Brabham Real Estate, in 1954, from which a percentage of every sales commission is donated to Habitat for Humanity in honor of his sellers and buyers. Yet, this charitable man rarely took credit for his generosity; and

Whereas, Mr. Brabham received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Carroll Campbell in 1988 for his exemplary community service, was selected the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year for 1992, and was a former president of Black River Electric Cooperative and member of the State Development Board, Federal Crop Insurance Board in Washington D.C., the Housing and Urban Development Board in Atlanta, and the South Carolina National Bank Board; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives extends its sympathy to the family and friends of John M. Brabham, Sr., who is survived by his wife, Louise Brabham; a son, John M. Brabham, Jr.; and a daughter, Mary Sheridan. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of John M. Brabham, Sr., of Sumter on Thursday, August 9, 2001, and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. John M. Brabham, Sr., of Sumter.
