TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF HARRY THORNTON HARVIN OF SUMTER, PROMINENT DENTIST AND CIVIC LEADER, ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2001, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of Harry Thornton Harvin of Sumter, prominent dentist and civic leader, on October 2, 2001, at the age of eighty-five; and
Whereas, Dr. Harvin was born May 22, 1916, in Manning to the late Stewart Ingram and Lelia Burgess Harvin. He attended Manning public schools and graduated from Presbyterian College in 1937 where he served as Student Body President, President of Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and a member of the baseball team. Dr. Harvin was married for fifty-four years to the late Charlotte Hines "Toby" Harvin; and
Whereas, Dr. Harvin graduated from Emory University Dental School in Atlanta and practiced dentistry in Sumter for fifty-six years. He was the past president of the South Carolina Dental Association and member of the Board of Dental Examiners; and
Whereas, Dr. Harvin was former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sunset Country Club, president of the Sumter Rotary Club, a member of the Shaw-Sumter Community Council, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 15. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder Emeritus, Superintendent of Christian Education, former Clerk of the Session, and moderator of the New Harmony Presbytery. Dr. Harvin also served in World War II as a United States Navy Lieutenant Commander; and
Whereas, Dr. Harvin always had a smile on his face and a friendly remark that made patients, colleagues, and friends feel comfortable in his presence. He loved the practice of dentistry and it showed in the inquiries from his patients who miss him and his gentle grandfatherly manner; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives extends its sympathy to the family and friends of Harry Thornton Harvin. He is survived by three sons, Dr. Harry Thornton Harvin, Jr., of Kennesaw, Georgia, Cameron Thompson Harvin of Sumter, and Steven LeGrande Harvin of Columbia; four daughters-in-law, Suzanne Brooks Harvin of Kennesaw, Georgia, Lynn Riddick Harvin of Columbia, Katherine Hopkins Harvin and Maryanne Earls Harvin both of Sumter; a sister, Cecelia Harvin Eadon of Manning; a brother, William Burgess Harvin of Manning; six grandsons; four granddaughters; and a granddaughter-in-law. He was predeceased in death by a son, Christopher Hines Harvin; two brothers, Stewart Ingram Harvin, Jr., and Charles Richard Harvin; and a sister, Leila Olive Harvin. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Harry Thornton Harvin of Sumter, prominent dentist and civic leader, on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Harry Thornton Harvin, Jr.
