TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF CHARLES L. DAWKINS, M.D., OF SUMTER AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is sincerely saddened to learn of the death of an esteemed doctor and community leader, Charles L. Dawkins, M.D., of Sumter who passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center; and
Whereas, Dr. Charles L. Dawkins was born in Spartanburg, the son of Alvin and Ella Mayhin Dawkins; and
Whereas, he graduated summa cum laude from Claflin College in 1966 with degrees in mathematics and chemistry. He received a direct commission as an officer in the United States Army in 1968; and
Whereas, Dr. Dawkins began his career in Philadelphia, working for E.I. DuPont de Nemoirs and Co. Inc., at the Marshall Research and Development Laboratory; and
Whereas, Dr. Dawkins resigned from DuPont to attend Temple University Medical School on an academic scholarship. While in medical school he received an achievement award for excellence from the First Pennsylvania Banking and Trust Company. After graduation, Dr. Dawkins completed residencies in general surgery, otorhinolaryngology, and related allergies; and
Whereas, Dr. Charles L. Dawkins was a diplomate of the St. Christophers Children's Hospital Residency and the Chavalier Jackson Clinic, he served on the staff of Hahnemann Medical College Associates and later took a position as Regional Director of Otolaryngology at Shaw Air Force Base; and
Whereas, Dr. Dawkins opened the Sumter Otologic and Allergy Clinics in 1981, the Sumter Hearing Clinic in 1983, and the Sumter Speech and Language Clinics in 1986. These vital clinics have been listed with Dunn and Bradstreet since 1982 and provided managed care for more than ten thousand patients; and
Whereas, in 1985, Dr. Dawkins was appointed by Governor Richard W. Riley as a commissioner on the South Carolina State Board of Medical Examiners; and
Whereas, Dr. Dawkins was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and on the Board of Directors of Iris Communications, Inc.; he was also an active member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an assistant Sunday school teacher for the Men's Class; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives extends its sympathy to the family, friends, and the many people whose lives were touched by Dr. Charles L. Dawkins. He is survived by his wife, Virdeena Britt Dawkins; two daughters, Nichole Dawkins and Jenaii Dawkins-Miranda; and a grandson, Charles Louis Miranda. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Charles L. Dawkins, M.D., of Sumter and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Virdeena Britt Dawkins of Sumter.
