A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MRS. SHIRLEY CORBETT OF FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR HER WORK AS DIRECTOR OF THE FLORENCE COUNTY COALITION FOR ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION, AND TO WISH HER AND HER FAMILY MANY YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS UPON HER RETIREMENT.

Whereas, Mrs. Shirley Corbett is ending her service as Director of the Florence County Coalition for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention, a position through which she has touched countless lives in Florence County and throughout the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, Shirley Corbett is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Francis Marion University, where she was the recipient of the Psychology Award presented by the department's faculty, and where she later earned her Masters of Science degree; and

Whereas, Mrs. Corbett began her lifelong career as a counselor and educator at Florence-Darlington Technical College where she helped students make crucial decisions affecting their health, academics, and career; she later expanded her duties by becoming coordinator of the college's counseling services and as an instructor in the school's Department of Human Services; and

Whereas, Mrs. Corbett became a prevention specialist at the Circle Park Prevention Center in 1994 and was named Director of the Florence County Coalition for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention in 1996; during her tenure, she has overseen all the initiatives of the coalition, including the statewide expansion of the TOAST (Techniques on Alcohol Standards and Training) program and the efforts to adopt a "zero tolerance" policy for drinking and driving; she has also written and developed several grant programs that have led to reduction in substance abuse in the State; and

Whereas, Shirley Corbett has shared forty-six years of marital happiness with her husband, F. M. Corbett, and she is the proud mother of three children and four grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize Mrs. Shirley Corbett's unmatched accomplishments in the field of substance abuse prevention and treatment, and those who know her best are confident that, despite her retirement, she will continue to be a positive influence on those who struggle against this illness. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Mrs. Shirley Corbett of Florence, South Carolina, for her work as Director of the Florence County Coalition for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention and to wish her and her family many years of health and happiness upon her retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Shirley Corbett.
