A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO WELCOME ANDREW CUOMO, THE FORMER UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT, TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS FOUR YEARS OF OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE AS A CABINET SECRETARY.

Whereas, Andrew Cuomo, the former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development will be speaking at Furman University on Monday, March 18, 2002; and

Whereas, serving as HUD Secretary from 1997 to 2001, Andrew Cuomo was the second youngest cabinet member in United States history; only his father-in-law, Robert F. Kennedy was younger; and

Whereas, Secretary Cuomo is credited for restructuring HUD from the ground up during his tenure; and

Whereas, Secretary Cuomo implemented the widely praised HUD Management Reform Plan in 1997, which not only cracked down on waste, fraud, and abuse, but also substantively addressed decades-old management problems at the department; and

Whereas, Secretary Cuomo initiated other key reforms, including the creation of a HUD Enforcement Center; the creation of more efficient processing centers; and the creation of Community Builder employees; and

Whereas, Andrew Cuomo's innovative spirit demonstrates a level of passion and commitment that is exceedingly rare among America's new generation of leaders; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are most honored to have Andrew Cuomo visit our State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, welcomes Andrew Cuomo, the former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, to the State of South Carolina, and commends him for his four years of outstanding and dedicated service as a cabinet secretary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be delivered to Andrew Cuomo.
