A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF MRS. MARY ELLEN "SUE" RAWL WINGARD OF LEXINGTON, ON SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2002, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mary Ellen "Sue" Rawl Wingard of Lexington, on Saturday, March 16, 2002; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wingard was born in Lexington County to Walter Phillip and Ernestine Price Rawl and was married to the late Robert W. Wingard, Sr., of Lexington; and

Whereas, she graduated from Lexington High School in 1949 and Newberry College in 1953. She later became president of the Newberry College Alumni Association and received the Newberry College Outstanding Alumni Award in 1988; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wingard was a partner in Walter P. Rawl and Sons, Inc., a vegetable grower and distributor in Lexington County and spent her life promoting and encouraging all aspects of farming; and

Whereas, this lovely lady was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Lexington where she served as a teacher, worship leader, council member, and member of the WELCA; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wingard was an active leader in many community organizations. She was on the Board of Directors of Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative Round-Up Trust Fund, the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, and the Lowman Home; and

Whereas, she also was a member of the South Carolina Agricultural Commission and Hollow Creek Community Club and gave of her time and talents to many other religious, civic, and professional organizations throughout her life; and

Whereas, for her overwhelming generosity, Mrs. Wingard was recognized with the President's Award from the Lexington County Chamber of Commerce in 1997. She received the Lexington Arts Association's Standing Ovation Award for exemplary contributions to the arts in 2001; and

Whereas, the General Assembly extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Sue Wingard. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Bob Wingard of Lexington, Charles and Jan Wingard of Gilbert, Susan and Jack Clifton of Gilbert; grandchildren, Lauren and Robert Clifton of Gilbert; brothers, Dial, Howard, and Wayne Rawl of Gilbert; sisters, Doris Reynolds, Jettie Derrick, and Joyce Bolin of Gilbert. She was preceded in death by two siblings, Blandon and Mildred Rawl. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their sincere sorrow upon the death of Mrs. Mary Ellen "Sue" Rawl Wingard of Lexington, on Saturday, March 16, 2002, and extend deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mrs. Mary Ellen "Sue" Rawl Wingard of Lexington.
