A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE SPARTANBURG HIGH SCHOOL "VIKINGS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND THEIR COACHES FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL SEASON AND ON WINNING THE 2001-2002 CLASS AAAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, time seemed to stop as the Spartanburg High School "Vikings" Boys Basketball Team had one last opportunity to clinch the championship. With twenty-seven seconds left in the game, the Richland Northeast "Cavaliers" (29-2) had stormed back from a ten-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the game at 61, a miracle play by the Spartanburg "Vikings" (28-3) ended the game with a 63-61 victory and the 2001-2002 Class AAAA State Basketball Championship; and

Whereas, this win gave Spartanburg High School a basketball and football state title in the same academic year, the first Class AAAA team to accomplish the feat, and thirteenth school overall in state history; and

Whereas, the accomplishments of the "Vikings" this past season have brought deserved recognition and credit not only upon the members of the team and their school, but upon their community and county as well; and

Whereas, for Head Coach Doug Lowe, along with Assistant Coach Lee Dillard, to accomplish these outstanding achievements of dedication, determination, and development of such a special caliber of athletes speaks very highly of their gifted ability as basketball coaches; and

Whereas, the Spartanburg High School "Vikings" Boys Basketball Team consisted of Donald Stevenson, Tony Ballenger, Brandon Sims, Charles Sims, Chad Graham, Quincy Halliday, Duran Mills, Blake Cummings, Jerry Hughes, Blake Genoble, Vern Sims, Jarvis Mathis, Manning White, Steven Dogan, and Jamaal Brown; and

Whereas, additional support for this outstanding team was provided by JV Coach Bill Dees, C-Team Coach Dan Smith, Managers Ebony Steen and Terri Drummond, Videographer Adam Griffis, Athletic Trainer Bryant Rose, and Statistician Stewart Elliott; and

Whereas, with great pride it is fitting to pause in our deliberations to reflect upon the success of the 2001-2002 Spartanburg High School "Vikings" Boys Basketball Team, and it is worthy to note that each player maintained a keen desire to win and an inspiration to give their best at all times. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their sincere congratulations to the Spartanburg High School "Vikings" Boys Basketball Team and their coaches for an exceptional season and on winning the 2001-2002 Class AAAA State Basketball Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Spartanburg High School "Vikings" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Doug Lowe.
