A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE CLARENDON COUNTY'S LAURENCE MANNING ACADEMY SWAMPCATS ON THEIR GUTSY RALLY TO PULL AHEAD OF CARDINAL NEWMAN 8-7 TO TAKE THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION AAA 2002 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, CAPPING THEIR STELLAR 30-2 BASEBALL SEASON.

Whereas, the Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats of Clarendon County put on a final rally with two outs to snap a 7-7 tie in the seventh inning and capture the AAA South Carolina Independent Schools Association 2002 baseball title the hard way; and

Whereas, that come-from-behind RBI single by T. J. McCord to score Joey Edwards from third was not the first time during their 30-2 championship season that the Swampcats were forced to rally for a win, once from being down 13-2 and once trailing 12-6; and

Whereas, the gutsy team "never gives up" according to Coach Steve Belangia, who trusted their ability to snatch a victory from the Cardinal Newman team who had blanked them 4-0 in an earlier double elimination pairing; and

Whereas, the Swampcats made up a first-inning three-run deficit on the way to the crown, sparked by senior righthander Brent Rembert who earned the win in relief, striking out six batters in three innings, and whose two-out, two-run triple knotted the score 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning; and

Whereas, McCord finished the championship game at 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI's, and Chris Skinner went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI's; and

Whereas, eight out of the starting nine Swampcats reached base at least once on a walk or a hit; and

Whereas, starting hurler Tommy Wampler finished his senior season at an impressive 9-0, combining with his fellow senior Rembert who booked an 11-1 year to vanquish all but two foes; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to be able to acknowledge the accomplishments of this championship team: Tucker Belangia, Brian Bridges, T. J. McCord, Joey Edwards, Chris Skinner, King Cutter, Patrick Oliver, Will Ardis, Tommy Wampler, Brent Rembert, Chris Bailey, McNeil Epps, R. J. Rowell, Keith Stewart, Matthew Newman, Steve Davis, William Austin James; Bat boys: Frankie Wampler and Robbie Ouzts; and Coaches: Steve Belangia, Tom Wampler, and Bubba Davis. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives congratulate Clarendon County's Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats on their gutsy rally to pull ahead of Cardinal Newman 8-7 to take the South Carolina Independent Schools Association AAA 2002 State Championship, capping their stellar 30-2 baseball season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Belangia on behalf of the team.
