A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING ROLAND "ROCKY" GANNON FOR BEING SELECTED BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA AVIATION ASSOCIATION AS THE 2002 AVIATOR OF THE YEAR AND CONGRATULATING HIM ON BEING INDUCTED INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA AVIATION HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, the South Carolina Aviation Association has named Roland "Rocky" Gannon, one of South Carolina's most outstanding and extensively decorated combat pilots, as the 2002 Aviator of the Year which carries with it induction into the South Carolina Aviation Association Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, Rocky Gannon is an international aviation consultant specializing in airports and air traffic control. In 1993, he retired as Executive Director of the Florence Regional Airport. Prior to accepting that assignment in 1986, Gannon was an independent aviation consultant in Washington, D.C. In 1980, then Colonel Gannon retired from the United States Air Force after thirty-seven years of active duty. During that time, he flew more than six thousand hours as a pilot in thirty-four different types of aircraft from bombers to transports, gliders to fighters; and

Whereas, he has fifty military awards and decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, ten Air medals, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He flew as a combat pilot in World War II, Korea, Belgian Congo, and three hundred eighty-seven combat missions in Vietnam; and

Whereas, after World War II, he served three years in the occupation of Iwo Jima and Japan. He served fourteen of his thirty-seven years overseas. He is married to the former Roberta Gause of Kingstree and has three grown children, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, we are delighted to have this opportunity to recognize and accord special honor to this distinguished gentleman and remarkable aviator. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends Roland "Rocky" Gannon for being selected by the South Carolina Aviation Association as the 2002 Aviator of the Year and congratulates him on being inducted into the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Rocky Gannon.
