A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE FIREFIGHTERS OF NEW YORK CITY'S ENGINE COMPANY 53 AND LADDER COMPANY 43 FOR THEIR COURAGEOUS EFFORTS DURING THE TERRORIST ATTACKS OF SEPTEMBER 11 AND TO THANK THEM FOR THE HOSPITALITY THEY HAVE SHOWN TO OFFICIALS OF THE PALMETTO STATE.

Whereas, the United States of America, specifically the cities of New York and Washington, D.C. suffered a great tragedy on the morning of September 11, 2001; and

Whereas, the New York City Fire Department lost a number of its brave and courageous firefighters during their heroic efforts to save lives during the horrible events of that day; and

Whereas, the brave firefighters of Engine Company 53 and Ladder Company 43 played a critical role in the fire department's efforts on September 11 and the ensuing days thereafter to save lives and recover bodies of those lost in the tragic bombings and collapse of the Twin Towers and surrounding buildings that made up the World Trade Center; and

Whereas, Al Schickler and Kevin Joos, two members of Engine Company 53 and Ladder Company 43 honored the State of South Carolina with their presence by traveling to the City of Folly Beach and joining Representative Wallace Scarborough, Mayor Knox, and other distinguished officials of the city in a ceremony to honor the fallen firefighters of New York City; and

Whereas, the personnel of Engine Company 53 and Ladder Company 43 displayed their hospitality towards Representative Harry Askins and his family during their recent visit to New York City; and

Whereas, it is with great humility that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly recognize the heroic efforts and tremendous sacrifices made by the entire New York City Fire Department, including those members of Engine Company 53 and Ladder Company 43, on that dark day when all Americans were brought together by an unthinkable act of evil. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend the Firefighters of New York City's Engine Company 53 and Ladder Company 43 for their courageous efforts during the terrorist attacks of September 11 and thank them for the hospitality they have shown to officials of the Palmetto State.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Firefighters of Engine Company 53 and Ladder Company 43 of the New York City Fire Department.
