TO RECOGNIZE THE OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE DREHER HIGH SCHOOL LADY BLUE DEVIL SOCCER TEAM FOR WINNING TWENTY-TWO CONSECUTIVE GAMES TO EARN THE REGION CHAMPIONSHIP AND THEN THE CLASS AAA GIRLS STATE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP ON MAY 10, 2002.
Whereas, Dreher High School's Lady Blue Devil soccer team exhibited teamwork, dedication, tenacity, and ability on May 10, 2002, at the Class AAA girls soccer championship at Memorial Stadium in Columbia by defeating the Upper State champion and second-ranked Eastside High School; and
Whereas, Dreher displayed a great amount of character by earning the second place ranking in the South Carolina High School Coaches Association poll during the second week of the season and then maintaining it by winning twenty-two consecutive games until finally being ranked in first place for the final week of the playoffs; and
Whereas, Dreher earned its first ever state title and the first title ever in Class AAA girls soccer for any team besides Eastside High School or Riverside High School; and
Whereas, the Blue Devils fought through a very closely contested first sixty minutes of the match only to find themselves down by one goal when sophomore Lucia Derks scored a fine goal on an assist by Jessica Rood to send the game to overtime; and
Whereas, the team then dominated the overtime, scoring two goals in twenty minutes, one by freshman Erin Miller on an assist by Lucia Derks and another by senior Blair South, to win the game by a score of three to one; and
Whereas, this entire team of outstanding athletes, coached by Erik Norton and Lydia Bienias, proved that hard work, faith, and persistence will be rewarded; and
Whereas, every member of the team deserves accolades. The team members are Alex Creswick, Brittany Johnson, Lauren Wingo, Sarah Lewis, Marissa Watson, Katherine Baysinger, Erin Miller, Kate Heilich, Blair South, Sarah Sutusky, Jessica Rood, Geordie Ulmer, Sarah Harvey, Danielle Heilich, Kate Foster, Lucia Derks, Lucy Muller, Joanna Long, and Brittany Bagwell. Erik Norton is the head coach and is assisted by Lydia Bienias and team managers Jessica Woodward and Drew Miller; and
Whereas, the Lady Blue Devil soccer team has brought great pride to their families, the school, its many supporters, and the City of Columbia; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to congratulate these fine athletes of Dreher High School for their hard work and skill in earning the State AAA soccer title for the year 2002. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the Dreher High School Lady Blue Devil soccer team for winning twenty-two consecutive games to earn the region championship and then the Class AAA Girls State Soccer Championship on May 10, 2002.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Principal Jeanne Stiglbauer, Dreher High School.
