A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MR. DAVID L. LUCAS, OWNER AND OPERATOR OF CHARWOOD COUNTRY CLUB, FOR HIS EFFORTS TO PROVIDE THE FINEST GOLFING IN THE MIDLANDS OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM AND HIS STAFF ON CHARWOOD'S SELECTION AS SOUTH CAROLINA'S GOLF COURSE OF THE YEAR FOR 2002.

Whereas, David L. Lucas, Sr., known to many as "Rock", is a player with the Professional Golf Association and is the owner and operator of Charwood Country Club located in West Columbia, South Carolina; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association has chosen Charwood Country Club as South Carolina's Golf Course of the Year for 2002; and

Whereas, Mr. Lucas and his staff maintain Charwood Country Club as a beautiful twenty-seven-hole, semi-private facility, and it is considered to be a community-oriented, user-friendly course dedicated to the service of golfers of all ages and handicaps and to the development of the game; and

Whereas, the game of golf has its roots in the hills of Scotland, and this sport has exploded into a worldwide recreation played by men and women of all ages. Nowhere is golf more critical to the success of a state's tourism industry than in South Carolina; from the mountains to the coast, the courses in South Carolina are seen as some of the most beautiful and challenging in the entire United States; and

Whereas, South Carolina's Golf Course of the Year is an award that is coveted by course owners and operators throughout the State and is considered one of the highest honors to be bestowed in the industry with past recipients including The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, the Tradition Club and Bay Tree courses in Myrtle Beach, and the course at Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island; and

Whereas, the award for Golf Course of the Year is based on a set of criteria that looks for superior course quality, exceptional quality of management, and the course's contributions to the community and to the growth of the game itself; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are proud to recognize David "Rock" Lucas for his work in operating one of the premier golf courses in the Palmetto State and wish him and his staff continued success in years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend Mr. David L. Lucas, owner and operator of Charwood Country Club, for his efforts to provide the finest golfing in the midlands of South Carolina and to congratulate him and his staff on Charwood's selection as South Carolina's Golf Course of the Year for 2002.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. David L. Lucas of West Columbia, South Carolina.
