To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 1018) requesting that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Highway 15 that runs through Silver in Clarendon County, which is the hometown of Althea Gibson, in honor of Althea Gibson, etc., respectfully
That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

REQUESTING THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF HIGHWAY 15 THAT RUNS THROUGH SILVER IN CLARENDON COUNTY, WHICH IS THE HOMETOWN OF ALTHEA GIBSON, IN HONOR OF ALTHEA GIBSON, A GREAT PIONEER AND CHAMPION IN TENNIS AND GOLF, WHO HAS BROUGHT TREMENDOUS RECOGNITION AND CREDIT TO OUR STATE THROUGH HER OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are proud to recognize such a worthy individual and sports icon as Althea Gibson for her wonderful athletic career and accomplishments; and
Whereas, she is a native of Silver, South Carolina, and has received many honors in sports. She has eleven grand slam tennis titles and has won the United States, French, and Australian championships as well as Wimbledon; and
Whereas, Ms. Gibson is featured in the International Tennis, International Women's Sports, and South Carolina Sports Halls of Fame. She has been on the Wheaties cereal box, the covers of Time Magazine and Sports Illustrated, Bell South's 2002 Calendar for South Carolina African-Americans, and appears on the South Carolina African-American monument; and
Whereas, Althea Gibson was named the Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in 1957 and 1958, was named one of the Top 100 Athletes of the Twentieth Century by ESPN, and was ranked as the number one tennis player in the world in 1957; and
Whereas, it is with great pride and admiration that the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Highway 15 that runs through Silver in Clarendon County in honor of Althea Gibson. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Highway 15 that runs through her hometown of Silver in Clarendon County in honor of Althea Gibson, a great pioneer and champion in tennis and golf, who has brought tremendous recognition and credit to our State through her outstanding accomplishments, and further request that the department install appropriate markers or signs on the highway so that as the public passes, they will be reminded of Althea Gibson's distinguished athletic career and outstanding accomplishments.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
