A BILL

TO PROVIDE THAT THE BEAUFORT COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION HAS THE AUTHORITY TO SET THE ANNUAL SALARY AND PER DIEM FOR ITS MEMBERS AFTER CONSIDERATION OF THE ISSUE AT THREE PUBLIC REGULARLY SCHEDULED MONTHLY MEETINGS AND AFTER ALLOWING PUBLIC COMMENT ON THE ISSUE, TO PROVIDE THAT THE COMPENSATION MAY NOT EXCEED THE COMPENSATION PAID TO MEMBERS OF THE BEAUFORT COUNTY COUNCIL, TO PROVIDE FURTHER THAT AFTER DECEMBER 31, 2001, NO INCREASE IN SALARY OR PER DIEM FOR BOARD MEMBERS MAY TAKE EFFECT UNTIL AFTER THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, AND TO PROVIDE THAT THE BOARD MAY ESTABLISH REASONABLE MILEAGE AND EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENTS FOR ITS MEMBERS WHICH MAY NOT EXCEED THE MILEAGE AND EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENT AMOUNTS ESTABLISHED BY THE STATE FOR ITS EMPLOYEES.

    Amend Title To Conform

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 1 of Act 295 of 1975, and any other provision of law, the Beaufort County Board of Education may establish the annual salary and per diem for the members of the board after three readings of the issue at public, regularly scheduled monthly meetings and after allowing public comment on the issue; provided the compensation may not exceed the compensation paid to members of the Beaufort County Council. After December 31, 2001, no increase in the salary or per diem for board members may take effect until after the next general election for school board members. The board may establish a policy of reasonable mileage and expense reimbursements which may not exceed the mileage and expense reimbursement amounts established by the State for its employees.

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
