A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS OF TAMEKA KIMESUNG LANE OF BLAIR, SOUTH CAROLINA, IN THE FIELD OF MEDICINE, TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON HER GRADUATION FROM THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA ON MAY 21, 2004, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HER IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, to achieve excellence in the field of medicine is no easy task and to do so with grace and an unwavering spirit is exceptionally rare; and

Whereas, Ms. Tameka Kimesung Lane is on the threshold of completing her lifelong dream of becoming a physician as she prepares for graduation from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston on May 21, 2004, and the trials and tribulations she encountered on her way would have discouraged the best of us; and

Whereas, growing up in the rural area of Blair, South Carolina, Ms. Lane was very poor and lived with her mother and two brothers in a small trailer with very little money for clothing or food; and

Whereas, after the health of Ms. Lane's mother, Nancy Lane, began to deteriorate, Ms. Lane left school to care for her mother and to take on the role of financial provider for her family, working as often as she could to earn money for her mother's health care; and

Whereas, throughout her life, Ms. Lane cared for her mother and other members of her family, often putting her dream of becoming a physician on hold, but never doubting that one day she would achieve that dream; and

Whereas, through her hard work and perseverance, Ms. Lane graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1996 with a B.S. in Nursing, and went on to work as a nurse in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia; and

Whereas, with her commitment to rigorous study, Ms. Lane went on to be promoted to a charge nurse within a year, making it one of the fastest promotions to date within the Women's and Children's Services department, and she has not slowed down since; and

Whereas, accepted to medical school in 2000, Ms. Lane excelled in everything that crossed her path, and she has been recognized for her service to the community as well as to MUSC and the departments with which she has worked; and

Whereas, Ms. Lane, along with her brother, Shakeem Kenya Lane, will become the first sister and brother to graduate at the same time from the College of Medicine and the first African-American siblings ever to graduate from the College of Medicine at MUSC; and

Whereas, specializing in Dermatology, Ms. Lane has accepted an invitation to do her internship at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and will do her residency at the New York University Hospital; and

Whereas, throughout her life Ms. Lane has dealt with a number of seemingly insurmountable setbacks on the path toward her goal of becoming a doctor. Through these setbacks, Ms. Lane has kept a positive attitude, and while at times her goal was hard to see, her heart never lost sight of her dream; and

Whereas, Tameka Lane is an example of triumph though adversity and the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are more than proud to call her one of our own. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize the outstanding achievements of Tameka Kimesung Lane of Blair, South Carolina, in the field of medicine, congratulate her upon her graduation from the Medical University of South Carolina on May 21, 2004, and extend best wishes to her in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Tameka Kimesung Lane of Blair, South Carolina.
