TO EXPRESS THE SINCEREST GRATITUDE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE UNITED STATES SUBMARINE VETERANS, INC., CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA CHAPTER, FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND PRECISION IN RESTORING THE "LITTLE DAVID" TO ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE IN NAVAL HISTORY.

Whereas, the Berkeley Historical Society and Museum in Moncks Corner is the home of an exquisitely accurate replica of the David; and

Whereas, the replica is part of an exhibit extolling and explaining the role the Davids played in the United States Civil War; and

Whereas, also known as "the little david", the Davids were small steam-powered torpedo boats that operated around Charleston about the same time as the H.L. Hunley. In fact, one was sometimes used as a towing vessel for the Hunley; and

Whereas, the David was conceived and designed by Dr. St. Julian Ravenel to ride very low in the water and attack by ramming a spar torpedo. However, she was not a submarine, but had an open cockpit and was powered by a small steam boiler; and

Whereas, the David's attack against the federal New Ironsides on October 5, 1863, damaging her enough to cause her to withdraw and make repairs, was the first successful torpedo attack in history; and

Whereas, the exhibit memorializing this important event in Naval History was made possible by the more than five thousand man-hours spent in the restoration of the replica by the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., Charleston Chapter; and

Whereas, because of their dedication in completely refurbishing the vessel, originally constructed as an exhibit in 1970, and in restoring it to the specifications and details of its original construction in 1863, these volunteers have ensured the David's place in nautical history. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina hereby express the sincerest gratitude of the State of South Carolina to the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., Charleston, South Carolina Chapter for their dedication and precision in restoring the "Little David" to its rightful place in Naval History.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., Charleston, South Carolina Chapter.
