A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO INVITE THE NATIONAL COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, THE HONORABLE RONALD F. CONLEY, TO ADDRESS THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN JOINT SESSION AT 12:30 P.M. ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2003.

Whereas, the Honorable Ronald F. Conley was elected National Commander of the 2.8 million member American Legion on August 28, 2002, in Charlotte, North Carolina, during the 84th National Convention of the nation's largest veterans organization; and

Whereas, the Honorable Ronald F. Conley, after serving as an air policeman in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1966, became a member of The American Legion in 1966, founded a new post in 1972, and served for twenty-two years as post adjutant and four years as its commander; and

Whereas, he has dedicated himself to the service of other veterans and their families for more than thirty years by holding innumerable offices at the local, state, and national level of The American Legion and in 1988 by serving as the Founder and President of the American Legion for Homeless Veterans Corp. of Pennsylvania, a corporation that operates eight homes for veterans; and

Whereas, the Honorable Ronald F. Conley spent his career as a steamfitter while serving on the examining board, finance, and election committees and a union steward of the Steamfitters Local 449 and holding the office of superintendent and general foreman on multi-million dollar projects such as the Greater Pittsburgh Airport; and

Whereas, he has served two Pennsylvania governors on the Vietnam Veterans Herbicide Commission and served as a member of the Knights of Equity, Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans in Canada - United States unit, and Saints Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church; and

Whereas, he married the former Barbara Lou Dilgen and they are the parents of five children: Christina, Ronald II, Denise, Shannon, and Tim, and the grandparents of ten grandchildren: Tara, Tracy, Katie, Erin, Josh, Brian, Andrew, Jonathon, Daniel, and Benjamin. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the National Commander of the American Legion, the Honorable Ronald F. Conley, is invited to address the South Carolina General Assembly in Joint Session in the Chamber of the House of Representatives at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2003.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Ronald F. Conley.
